ARGENTINA INVITES YOU – ROSARIO AWAITS YOU
Located 300 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires, Rosario gathers a beautiful natural scenery, cultural offerings of all genres and tastes, with entertainment for young and old as well, and a rich architectural heritage.
With 1,000,000 inhabitants and a modern urban development, one can tour the city within minutes and also, in a matter of minutes, one can cross to the sandbanks of the vast Alto Delta of the Paraná River (that’s why in Guaraní, the original native’s language, Paraná means “relative of the sea”).
Its shopping malls are among the best in Latin America. Its hotels and gastronomy are ever-growing and offer good choices to please all kinds of demands and pockets. They offer delicious typical dishes made of river fish as well as the best of Argentine and international cuisine.
Its airport receives flights from several parts of Argentina, Brazil and Chile. And it enjoys excellent road connections with the rest of the country.
Events and Business Tourism
Rosario has experienced an outstanding growth in the business tourism segment in the country due to its position as one of the most important centers for worldwide agri-food production and exports. From its river ports, overseas ships depart to all parts of the globe. Due to its high quality service infrastructure, the city became the second most important organizer of conferences, seminars and events of all kinds in Argentina.
Cultural Production, Entertainment and Tango
Rosario is well-known for its universities, its cultural production and its publishing industry. And also for the creativity of its local artists, who fill the entertainment guide with their shows displayed on the wide local net of theaters, pubs and restobars. On the stages you can find shows of national level for young and old. And in its “milongas de tango” (tango parties) you will learn to dance and will enjoy great musicians playing this genre which today arouses a passionate interest all over the world.
Theaters and Museums
The local artistic heritage includes magnificent theaters such as El Círculo, Auditorio Fundación, La Comedia or Centro Cultural Parque España.
Rosario is the birthplace of famous plastic artists as Antonio Berni, and also holds museums like the Contemporary Arts Museum Macro (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Rosario), which houses the largest collection of Argentine contemporary artists, the Fine Arts Museum “Juan B. Castagnino”, the Decorative Arts Museum “Firma y Odilo Estévez”, and the Historical Museum “Julio Marc”, among many others.
The River and its Delta
The city runs along the Paraná River and allows people both to relish taking boat trips to the isles of the Alto Delta —a strip of nature in its purest form spreading over 45 kilometers—, and to practice water sports, or ride across the Rosario-Victoria bridge to Entre Ríos.
Ten minutes away by motorboat, opposite to the city center, tourists can enjoy a marvelous beach day in the isles sand banks. Besides, there are beach resorts on the shores of the city. All of them offer beachside bars, restaurants and excellent service infrastructure.
The Flag Memorial and the Architectural Heritage
The National Flag Memorial (Monumento Nacional a la Bandera) stands in the historical area of the city next to the Paraná River, where the Argentine flag was raised for the first time. Its impressive architecture symbolizes a ship sailing to the future. Next to it, there is the Pasaje Juramento, a splendid path with Lola Mora’s sculptures.
By walking along the city streets, one can appreciate the richness of its architectural styles. From Art Nouveau to modernism together with Art Deco or rail or port architecture, buildings reflect the contributions of the various migration groups. Its municipal district centers take their place in buildings such as the mansion Villa Hortensia in the northern area of the city; in a redesigned railroad station in the city center; or in a recently built site, the only one erected in Latin America by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza.
Located downtown, there is also the house where Ernesto “Che” Guevara was born.
Arte a la Vista – Museo Urbano
Rosario streets also house art expressions up on the walls of its high buildings. The city develops the project “Arte a la Vista – Museo Urbano” (Art at Sight – Urban Museum) that entails reproducing in mural-size the works of great painters from Rosario, such as Antonio Berni, Antonio Gambartes, Julio Vanzo, Juan Grela, Emilia Bertolé, Alfredo Guido and Augusto Schiavoni. These huge paintings can be seen from a distance of 500 meters and transform the city into an art gallery that pays tribute to its plastic artists.
Calmness and Green Parks
Parks are green spaces where people can relax and enjoy the city. One can also go all over the central coastline walking by the river banks —real balconies overlooking onto the river— and enjoy a drink at one of its bars. There you can also find museums or sites especially designed for children’s play.
On weekends and holidays, the parks host craft fairs and markets, and groups of artists offer street shows.
The Children’s City
Rosario offers you the opportunity to take your children to places where they can play and develop their creativity. Such places include El Jardín de los Niños (the Children’s Field), la Isla de los Inventos (the Invention Island) and la Granja de la Infancia (the Childhood Farm), all of them are cultural spaces open to the public where fun and pedagogy are merged together. This three-piece work makes up the Ciudad de los Niños (Children’s City) project. Because of this initiative, among others, the city won an award from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
People can also take delight in visiting the Municipal Astronomical Complex, which includes the Observatory “Victorio Capolongo”, the Planetarium “Luis Cándido Carballo” and the Experimental Science Museum.
Historic Neighborhoods
Pichincha: A neighborhood which at the beginning of last century was famous for its many brothels. Nowadays, people can visit its fairs, the old train station Rosario Norte —which today houses the Department of Culture and the Museo de la Memoria— or have a coffee or a drink in its bars with tables on the tree-lined sidewalks.
Fisherton: Originally, it was meant to be the place of residence for the railroad personnel. Today it holds beautiful mansions of different styles.
Alberdi: Its former name was “Pueblo Alberdi” and the poet Alfonsina Storni lived there, at that time the village was connected to Rosario by railroad. The neighborhood includes important mansions, “Villa Hortensia” among them.
Saladillo: In days gone by, there stood the first country houses, some of which still exist. It has also been the center of the meat packing and processing industry since the beginning of the 20th Century.
